TANKINI
The tankini is one of the newest innovations to hit the swimsuit scene. As its name suggests, the tankini is one of a long line of variations on the bikini swimsuit. The tankini is rising quickly in the swimsuit market and has reached unprecedented levels of popularity among women, however, due to the extra coverage it offers. In a recent Mervyn’s department store survey, the majority of women stated that they would appreciate greater overall coverage in swimsuit design; the tankini is happy to oblige.

The tankini swimsuit is relatively simple in its design. Most tankinis pair bikini style bottoms, offering more complete coverage, with a fitted, tank-style top. The tank top is generally fairly tight so as to allow a consistent fit on the body. The length of tankini tops varies according to the swimsuit designer and manufacturer. When worn, some tankini tops are designed to reach all the way to the hips, meeting the bikini bottoms and providing complete abdominal coverage; others cut off at the waist or just above the waist.

As is true of any swimsuit style, the tankini has many variations in fit, cut, and style. The ruched tankini provides for tailored tankini top length, allowing women to vary the length of their top according to their torso size. The camikini is very similar to the tankini in its design but offers more bra-style support for the breasts.

The tankini will likely continue to grow in popularity in future years, as more and more women choose it for its generous body coverage. If it continues to sell in such large numbers, the tankini will soon join the maillot and the bikini in the celebrated pantheon of swimsuit styles.
